Dermal Fillers
As you get older you may begin to notice lines and wrinkles. These can be in the form of nose to mouth lines, or folds. There might also be lines from the edge of your mouth to your chin, which are called marionette lines. If you are a smoker you may also have lines around your top lip. These lines and many others like it can be treated with non-surgical procedures using dermal filler. Here are the answers to some of the most popular questions we get asked about this type of procedure.
How do you treat the lines? By using a combination of dermal fillers and botulinum toxin. Dermal fillers do exactly that, give your face a fuller appearance and smooth away the lines. We use botulinum toxin around the lip area if you have lines caused by smoking or your mouth is drooping downwards. What are the dermal fillers? The dermal fillers come from hyaluronic acid; the most popular are Teoysal and Juvederm. We have hyaluronic acid in our bodies already. It gives our skin the elasticity and plumpness that gives us our youthful appearance. Both fillers are produced as a gel and neither of them contain animal or human DNA which means it is one of the safest fillers on the market today. What does botulinum toxin do? Basically it restricts the movement in your muscles which cause the lines and wrinkles to appear in the first place by attaching on to the nerve endings. Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by a bacteria and it has been used successfully in non-surgical procedures for many years. Is it Painful? Not at all, we give you a topical anaesthetic before we begin the procedure, which makes sure you don’t feel any pain. What is the procedure? For the use of dermal fillers, we will inject the filler into the various parts of your face and then smooth out the gel to give a natural look. Botulinum toxin is injected directly into the muscles. Is there any bruising? There might be some swelling and a little bruising after the procedure, but that should disappear within a few days. Don’t put creams or make-up on the area for at least 8 hours in order to avoid infection. If you have had fillers there might also be some swelling and bruising, which will be temporary. Try not touch the area which was treated for at least a few hours. Will I see the results immediately? As soon as any bruising or swelling goes down you will see the benefits. How long does the treatment last? Dermal fillers last about 6-12 months and botulinum toxin around 3-6 months. Can anyone have the treatment? You shouldn’t use dermal fillers when you are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Although the dermal fillers we use don’t migrate through the body, there are no studies to show the effects on an unborn or feeding child. Medically it is recommended that cosmetic procedures aren’t carried out at this time. You will be asked to fill out a medical form and inform the practitioner of any medical history. |
